What is bankroll Management?

"Bankroll management" is sometimes abbreviated to BRM. It allows you to play within certain limits and avoid losing all your bankroll in the event of bad runs. Every poker player has to expect this from time to time.

This is "playing within your budget". The next step is to "play out of your bankroll" by playing at higher limits that have a high chance of losing all of the poker money.

Why is bankroll control important?

Variance is the reason you need to choose your limits in poker carefully. Variance can be described as the "ups or downs" in poker, where you may have good runs or bad runs of card. This results in fluctuating profits and losses.

There will be times when you lose money consistently if you play poker for a long time. It is not because of your bad playing but because the cards aren’t falling in your favor. It is possible to lose all your money if you don't have enough cash in your bankroll.

All players, regardless of skill, will experience some variance in their games. This variance can be managed by your bankroll to ensure you are able to play without getting broke.

Every time we are at the poker tables, online or live, we want to maximise our chances of making a profit while minimizing the chance of going bankrupt. This is where bankroll management comes in to play.

Which limits should I set?

Cash games.

Pot limit and Hold'em.

You should have a bankroll that is 20 times your total buy-in to play no limit or pot limit poker. If you want to maximize your chances of winning a $1/$2 game with a maximum buy-in of $200, you need a bankroll that is at least 4000.

A second way to apply bankroll management is to only put a maximum of 5% of your entire bankroll at one time. This is the equivalent of having 20 times the buy in for the game.

Limit Hold'em.

To play limit Holdem, however, you will need 300 Big Bets. This is the minimum amount you need to be able to play at the limit you desire. To play $1/$2 limit Holdem you will need a bankroll that is at least $600

Tournament games.
