Many terms are associated with sports betting. Save our glossary of terms for betting and refer to it as a reference when you run across an unfamiliar term or phrase while placing a bet.


A


Accumulator is a North American parlay betting system. It consists of two or more selections. To create a winning ticket, each side must win (or push).


Action: All live wagering options or total bets on a specific event. All betting odds posted by bookmakers are available for action.


There are three types of horse racing betting that can be placed on a horse for a win, place or show.


Added game: Listed on betting boards following the publication of main lists. They are quite common in college football and appear mainly because of public demand. Another possibility is a game that has been postponed, similar to a rainout or in baseball.


AET odds: These odds are posted after extra time (AET), and they apply primarily to soccer matches in which extra time has been added due to in game stoppages. AET odds are available as live betting options.


Also called: An athlete, horse or greyhound who does not finish in a paid position during a race.


Alternate lines: Odds that may be higher or lower then the main posted line. This is common with game total and point spread betting in football and basketball.


American odds: American chances are included in the "big three", which also includes fractional or decimal odds. American moneylines at (-110) have the same odds as 10/11 fractional pricing and 1.91 decimal. All three formats yield a $100 profit on winning $110 wagers.


Ante-post: Futures odds for greyhound and horse races posted at least one calendar day before the race. Ante-post odds can be found on Triple Crown races, such as the Kentucky Derby.


Arbitrage: Also called ARB betting, arbitrage is a style of wagering that covers all possible outcomes for a single game. ARB betting options can only be found when there are varying opinions about the correct odds for a particular match.


Asian handicap: Asian handicap odds are most popular in soccer. They start at 0.25 goals but can reach as high as 2.0 goals. These bets can only be placed in one direction, and there are no tie or draw options.


ATS: Against-the-spread odds (ATS), are designed to provide equal action for both sides of a competitive game. Las Vegas may be a -3.5 point ATS favorite home while Denver could be a +3.5 point underdog.
