How to play poker: The fundamental rules for all poker types

Although online poker has become a popular card game, there are many variations of poker.

We'll also talk about the four main types poker under which all poker game can be classified.

After you've mastered the basics, our guides will show you how to play popular poker types.

Rankings for poker-hands

All poker games are based on the same poker-hand rankings. This is used to decide who wins a game of poker.

Different poker game types use the common hand rank in different ways. Low-ball poker, for example, makes the lowest hand the most desirable.

Our poker-hand rankings pages will show you the order of poker hand strength.

Bluffing

By bluffing your opponents, it is possible to win poker hands with no best hand.

Bluffing involves displaying confidence by betting in a way that implies your hand is stronger than it really is. In the hopes that your opponents will believe your hand and fold, you may be able to project confidence in your hand.

Forced bets

Poker requires that you place a compulsory bet before the hand begins. It is usually called the 'ante’ or 'blind'. A lot of forms of the game have a small and big blind. However, the latter are generally two times larger than the former.

The dealer

Playing physical poker at home, in a bricks-and mortar casino or online is a matter of preference. The dealer's role determines how the blinds are placed and the players place their bets. The game generally unfolds clockwise, starting with the dealer.

Online and in-person casinos, the dealer is not usually one of the player. Therefore, a token denotes which hand the dealer is. This rotates clockwise, from one hand to another.

Optional betting

After the forced wagers, the first round begins. The following betting options are available to players depending on their level of confidence.

Call -- Matching a player's wager or raising

Raise -- Increase the size of an existing bet during the same round of betting

Fold -- To remove from the hand without losing any previous bets.

Check -- Players have the option to either check or decline to place a bet, while still retaining the right to make another bet later in the round.

All in -- If a player does not have enough chips to make a call, they can still play their chips. All-in players can only win the same amount of chips as they won in subsequent showsdowns.

Rounds of wagering

Each round of poker betting gives you the chance to use the betting options discussed in the previous section. These are based on your confidence and perception of the quality your opponents' hands. You can gauge the latter by observing how much they bet or raise.

All types of poker offer at most one round of betting. The vast majority of poker games have at least two rounds.

These rounds take place either before or after Texas Holdem's flop deal. This allows for players to strategize and plan their hand as they go. There can be up to four rounds in Texas Holdem or Omaha, also known as 'community-card' games.

Betting structure/limits

There are many ways that betting in poker can be organized. These are the three most common structures in online poker. They are listed along with the type and style of poker in online poker forums.

Pot limit (PL). A player may raise or place any amount, up to the pot's total size.

Fixed limit (FL), -- You cannot bet or raise more than a certain amount.

No Limit (NL), A player can wager all of his chips whenever it's their turn.

The main variations of poker

There are four main categories that can be used to classify the various types of poker:

Poker with community cards

The number of cards dealt to players is less than the total five-card poker hand. Players are dealt a number of community cards face-up with the goal of making the best possible five card hand using a combination of their own cards as well as the community cards.

The most well-known varieties include Omaha Holdem and Texas Holdem.

Straight poker

Poker's earliest form, each player is dealt five cards. There is a round where the players can raise and reraise up until the game is over.

Some of the most popular varieties are: three-card brag and five-card card brag

Draw poker

Another variant of poker in which all five cards are dealt at the start of the game is draw poker. This allows players to try to improve their hand by discarding and getting replaced cards.

The five-card draw is a well-known variety.

Stud poker

Stud-poker allows players to be dealt their cards individually in a set combination of face-up or face-down cards. There is usually a round of betting between each dealt card. Online Poker and Its Benefits - Your Quick Guide
