Blackjack basic strategy refers to a blackjack chart which shows you all possible combinations of hands against the dealer's hole cards. You won't make any money if you follow the rules of this strategy. However, it's the first step that you need to take if your goal is to become a winning blackjack player. That step will decrease the advantage of the casino. You will lose less money when you apply the blackjack basic strategy.

Blackjack Basic Strategy & Rules

Blackjack basic strategy can be tailored to specific rules. You can choose from 6 different strategies depending on the rules. Each variation will reduce the dealer's edge.

Number of card decks per shoe: There is a set number of decks for each deck. Most casinos have 6 decks of cards. However, there are games with 2 decks and 8 decks. The casino favors many decks, while fewer decks lower the house edge.

Soft 17: You may have noticed it on the blackjack tables: The dealer stands on soft 17(S17). This means that they must stop drawing cards after their cards reach A6. The casino is favored by H17.

Double any two cards. Blackjack players often have the option to double any of their first two cards. Even if the sum is just 5! This rule allows you to double A9, which I still remember from my days of card counting. Alternativly, you might be restricted from doubling if your cards' total is between 9 to 11 (D9) or worse, if your cards' values are 10 or 11.

Double after splitting (DAS): Assuming that my hand totals 88, I decide on splitting my hand. Double if I receive a 2, 3 or 4 from either card (for a value of 10, 11 or 12), If the casino gives me this option, and I do so, the house's edge decreases.

Surrender: This is the act of surrender. It involves quitting before we hit, or stand, and losing half the bet at the start of a hand. There are two types: the rare "early surrender" and "late surrender" depending on when the dealer checks their card for a possible blackjack. As this rule favors your odds, you should always sit at blackjack tables offering any type of surrender.

European style vs. US: Dealers are dealt two cards at US blackjack tables. One is facing down. In Europe, the dealer is dealt only one card.
