Twitter star: Great white shark cruises East Coast

Twitter star for Great White Shark Cruise East Coast

After one of their great white sharks gained some popularity, a fake Twitter handle was created by OCEARCH. Chris Fischer, the OCEARCH expedition chief, said Mary Lee was named after him and that the organization appreciates all the attention it has received.

"They are really intelligent, they really enjoy sharks and they're always on mission so we're just sort of rolling with it," he stated from the group's most recent expedition to Australia.

OCEARCH is even jumping on the bandwagon and launching "official Twitter handles" for two other sharks that it monitors off East Coast.

"The recent increase in followers has been fun but also like a second career. The account owner said that everything is done manually, and there are no automated tweets. "The best thing is thatOCEARCH’s multi-year project uses GPS tracks to post real-time data about dozens of great Whites across the globe. Mary Lee was visiting Ocean City, Maryland on Sunday. This is to better understand the shark's life cycle, and encourage conservation of these endangered predators.

The work of shark researchers is vital because of the many unknowns about the behavior, behaviour and ecology of white sharks. These massive animals are difficult to tag using modern GPS trackers, which would allow them to closely track their movements.

OCEARCH has the skill, resources and technology to complete the job. The organization operates largely on corporate funding and its crew consists of professional fisherman-turned-ocean explorers.

Robert Hueter, director at the Center for Shark Research at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota (Florida), says, "This gives us an improved understanding of their movement patterns through days, months, and years."

Gregory Skomal, a marine biologist, heads the Massachusetts Shark Research Program. This is because great whites can be seen more often along densely populated East Coast.

Sharks are attracted to Cape Cod and its environs, which are home to a number of seal colonies.

Skomal said that "essentially the cafe is open" and that customers are coming in. "Eighteen years ago, we might have seen three to four white shark sightings off the coast Massachusetts. Now, we are seeing more than 30 to 40 white shark sightings per year."

Based on the very few East Coast greatwhites that OCEARCH is tracking, the researchers are cautious about drawing quick conclusions regarding great white behavior.

Mary Lee and others have kept to the shore, much to the delight of their followers on Twitter. Others venture further out into the Atlantic.

Shark enthusiasts say they enjoy the tongue-inch tweets. Many people hope that the attention will dispel misinformation and fears about the endangered, powerful creatures. Online Poker - Rising From The Depths In A Sea Of Sharks
